The Esplanade @ Dunedin

The Esplanade is located at St. Clair beach in Dunedin, it is a very highly regarded place amongst locals. We go to the beach quite often, and a visit to the Esplanade usually follows. This write-up will share our multiple visits to the Esplanade.

On sunny days, we love to grab a seat at the outdoor area. On one of our first visits, we ordered some coffees and a savoury muffin to share while overlooking the sea, and enjoying the lovely weather.

We came a little bit later during the afternoon, so we couldn’t really sample their cabinet foods as they had been mostly sold out. The muffin however, was great. Buttery and moist.

On another short visit, we ordered  their french fries seasoned with garlic salt, a little lemon zest, and parsley. The fries were hot and crunchy, and is definitely a good snack to share. Make sure to grab a seat by the window, and enjoy the view.

During our most recent visit, we picked my sister up from the airport and went straight here for a late lunch around 3PM. It was her first meal here in Dunedin. We ordered a few dishes to share since it was quite close to dinner time.

We began with the fishermans soup, which came with fresh green-lipped mussels, clams, octopus, squid, and also a slice of ciabatta on the side. The tomato based soup was very rich and well seasoned, however, I wished it was a little bit spicier.

We also got some clams, which was fresh and light. It was cooked with garlic, white wine, and olive oil. I loved dipping the bread to soak up the addictive sauce. It was just delicious.

We also ordered a Salmone from their pizza menu. It was topped with cured salmon, fresh mozzarella, rucola, pesto, and balsamic vinegar. It was a simple pizza, however, it came with fresh and quality ingredients, and the execution was solid. The ingredients came together beautifully, and this was definitely the favourite dish for all of us. The base itself was fantastic, it was light and airy on the inside, yet crispy on the crust. The pizza dough was made on site in an open kitchen, and then wood fired. The pesto sauce was outstanding, it was exceptionally fresh and totally took the pizza to another level. The fresh mozzarella and salmon provided some richness to each bite, while the rucola and balsamic vinegar did a great job of ensuring that it did not become overly rich.

Overall, I would definitely recommend the pizzas. They are really, really good. When you consider the exceptional views, food, and the service at the Esplanade, it is easy to see why the place is so well loved by locals.
